What we remodel in Mountain View

Kitchen Remodeling in Mountain View

from $15,000 · 4–6 weeks

Monta Loma kitchens in Eichlers and Mackays are small and already open to the living area, so the work is cabinets, counters and keeping the mid-century lines; the sink stays put unless we cut the slab.

Homes in Mountain View

Mountain View has more kinds of house per square mile than most cities we work in. Before we talk about tile, we want to know whether yours is on a slab, which builder put it up, and whether it is a house or a unit with an HOA.

Mid-century modern tracts: Eichler, Mackay and Mardell

Monta Loma, plus the early-1970s Bell Meadows Eichlers. Eichlers have radiant-heat tubing in the slab and post-and-beam walls; many Mackay flattops are on slab too. Plumbing moves mean cutting concrete, so the drain locations shape the design.

Early-1900s to 1930s bungalows and Victorians

Old Mountain View. Craftsman and Spanish-revival bungalows on raised floors, with plaster walls and old drains. A few houses are on the city’s historic register, which matters only if the outside changes.

1950s–60s ranches

Rex Manor, Shoreline West, Cuesta Park, Waverly Park, Blossom Valley, Varsity Park. Single-story houses where small hall baths and closed kitchens are the usual starting point.

Townhomes and condos

Whisman, Downtown and along the main corridors. Stacked or shared-wall units: HOA approval first, and every shower pan flood-tested before tile because a neighbor lives below.

Permits in Mountain View

City of Mountain View Building Division at 500 Castro St, Mountain View issues building permits in Mountain View. Typical review time: per the city’s published estimates, about 5–7 days for a like-for-like bathroom and 6–8 weeks when walls change; about 5 business days for like-for-like kitchen cabinets and 2–3 months for a kitchen with wall changes. We confirm the current time when we apply. We pull the permit under our license and attend every inspection.

  • The city says a permit is required for all bathroom remodels; a standard toilet replacement in the same location is the exception.
  • Mountain View’s Green Building and Reach Code requires electrical pre-wiring for a future electric appliance when a remodel installs gas equipment; we include it in the electrical plan.
  • Houses on Mountain View’s Register of Historic Resources, including some in Old Mountain View, need a Historic Preservation permit for exterior changes; interior remodels do not need extra historic review.
  • Title 24 energy documentation is required on permitted kitchens; we prepare the forms.

Silicon Valley Clean Energy and PG&E; electrification rebates come through Silicon Valley Clean Energy, and the city has added funding to SVCE’s heat-pump water heater rebate.
